Eastpointe and the 38th District Court
The 38th District Court and the City of Eastpointe
The City of Eastpointe is 5.1 square miles and is home to the 38th District Court. According to the 2010 census, Eastpointe has a population of approximately 35,000. Eastpointe is a Metro Detroit suburb with 8 Mile Road as a shared border with the city of Detroit.
In 1992, the city of East Detroit changed its name to Eastpointe based mostly on the fear that the city’s civic identity was being negatively impacted by its much larger neighbor; Detroit. Nonetheless, the city’s school district is still called East Detroit Public Schools. Eastpointe operates under a council-manager government form meaning there are four council members and a mayor, all of which are elected at large. Eastpointe is accessible by many prominent county transportation routes including I-94, I-696, 8 mile, and 9 mile. Eastpointe is located close to many metro-recreation areas including Metro Park and Lake St. Clair. The 38th District Court is located at: 16101 Nine Mile Road, Eastpointe, Michigan 48021, Phone at 586-445-5020.
Eastpointe: Challenging and Busy Court Docket
The Honorable Carl F. Gerds III is the presiding Judge for the 38th District Court. I have known Judge Gerds for my entire career. He is a judge of excellent character and an overall great guy. He handles a demanding docket consisting of criminal, drunk driving, and traffic matters. Judge Gerds will give every litigant a break and sometimes even two bites at the apple; however, as with all judges, be respectful and be prepared to pay your fines and costs on your court date. If you do not have your fines and costs, Judge Gerds has been known to reschedule your case and make you return on another date to fulfill your financial obligation with the court.
Criminal, Traffic and Drunk Driving Cases in the 38th District Court
Eastpointe has a fair share of heavily traveled roads that are thoroughfares used to travel in and out of Detroit and the northern Macomb County suburbs. Gratiot Avenue, 8 Mile Road, and I-94 all are all notorious arteries that lead into Eastpointe, bringing vehicular traffic with occupants that have consumed alcohol or purchased drugs from neighboring communities. The vehicular traffic in Eastpointe translates into drug cases, drunk driving cases and of course, traffic tickets. ABDO LAW has several website pages dedicated to these topics (e.g. Drug Crimes, Drunk Driving, Traffic, Driving While License Suspended/DWLS). Disorderly conduct, retail fraud and domestic violence are other prevalent criminal offenses that occur in Eastpointe.
ABDO LAW opened its first office in East Detroit in 1980, specializing in criminal and drunk driving defense. Back in the day, a drunk driving case barely carried anything more than a $100.00 fine! Now, a first-time Eastpointe DUI offender can expect to pay around $1,000.00 in fines and costs, or more. Times have changed since 1980 and so has East Detroit-Eastpointe. But if you find yourself in trouble in Eastpointe, you can expect fair treatment by a court that has historically been an excellent place to practice law. Traffic tickets can also be administered with proper representation to avoid points and control insurance costs. Avoiding points for traffic ticket is a good investment because insurance company rating systems get to raise your premiums for 3 or more years from the date a traffic conviction appears on your record. The residents of Eastpointe are no different than anywhere else. They just want peace and tranquility. Judge Gerds will give you a chance to prove yourself worthy of a great deal in the criminal justice system but you may not be so lucky the second time.
